  1. Firstly, in order to begin your installiation of the version control system Git, take this link to go to Git's offical webisite: Git's Website

  2. Now that your on Git's official website, you'll notice that there are four main links in the middle of the page outlined in red, for our purposes, click on the red link listed as "Downloads" which can be found underneath the "About" link and to the left of the "Community" link.

  3. From Git's download page, please click on the respective link which corresponds to your operating system which you can find listed in blue in the middle of the page. For the purposes of this guide, we're using a Windows operating system and thus will be clicking on the blue Windows link for our instillation.

  4. After you have selected the Windows operating system link, you will see a multitude of installation links for the Git system, if you need a specific version of this system for your project, please click on its respective link on this page, otherwise, click on the "Click here to download" link found at the top of the page. This link will install the latest 64-bit version of Git onto your computer which at the time of writing is version 2.42.0.

  5. After you have selected and clicked on your preferred version, you should notice that the installer has begun downloading. After it has finished downloading, which takes around a few seconds, go into your downloads page. This can be done ether by selecting the downloads page of your browser which can be found by selecting the three dots at the top right corner of the screen and clicking downloads, or by going to your downloads page directly by opening your file explorer and clicking downloads.

  6. From your downloads page, you should now see a Git.exe file, this is the installer you have just downloaded, click on this file and allow it to make changes to your device to open the Git installer which should look like the visualization above. From here, you may read through Git's terms and conditions. Once you are finished, click the next button on the installers page.

  7. Now that you have read through Git's terms and conditions you will see the folder Git will install itself under. If you have a prefered file that you'd like to install Git under, you may change this with the browse button to find your preferred file, otherwise simply hit next.

  8. From this page you will see a list of what Git components you'd like the installer to install on your device, please click on all the blank options such that when you are finished each option has a blue checkmark. After this please hit next.

  9. Over the next few pages of the installer, you will presented with a host of various options to directly customize your Git instillation. In most of these cases the default and recommended option has been selected for you thus it is optimal to simply hit next until you get to the page in which the next button changes to an install button. If you would like to customize these options outside of these defaults, here are a few recommendations:

    1. If you have a prefered folder for Git to store its start menu, hit browse to select this file when on the start menu page.

    2. Git offers the selection of default text editors to use, if you already have a text editor on your system, select this editor from the options provided instead of the default editor Vim. In particualr we recommened selecting the extremely capable editor Visual Studio Code.

  10. Now that you have reached the end of the provided customization pages for the Git installation, please click on the install button located at the bottom of the page. The installer should now begin installing the program and may take a few minutes.

  11. After waiting a minute or two, the installer should now state the setup was complete. Congratulations! You have now successfully installed the newest version of the Git coding control system and can now close the installer using the finish option at the bottom right of the window.
